Shelby Temple

Dr Shelby Temple is an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at the University of Bristol, and Co-founder and Director of Azul Optics Ltd where he has led the development of an innovative tool for rapid and easy assessment of a key risk factor for Age-related Macular Degeneration.

As a visual neuroscientist working at top research institutions all over the world, Dr Temple has spent 20 years investigating the molecular and neural basis of vision as well as the impact of the light environment on vision and visual behaviours. His recent research into sensitivity of the eye to polarized light led to the development of a new clinically relevant method of assessing the density of macular pigments in the human retina. His translation of academic research into a commercial venture saw him receive the prestigious Innovator of the Year award in 2017 awarded from the UK Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council. Shelby is actively involved in developing and delivering CET courses on the dangers of high energy visible (blue light) and free radicals, as well as the importance of macular pigments in protecting the retina from photochemical damage leading to AMD and how to assess macular pigments in the eye.
